Driving America's Future Urges Support for Bipartisan
HR 2729 is aggressive, achievable solution to energy challenges
July 25, 2007

WASHINGTON Rodney E. Slater, chairman of Driving America's Future, today made the following statement in support of bipartisan fuel economy legislation introduced by Representatives Baron Hill (D-IN) and Lee Terry (R-NB). Several sponsors held a press conference on Capitol Hill announcing the strong support the bill has received including and more than 100 cosponsors.

"When the House of Representatives acts on energy legislation in coming weeks, members will have a clear choice between the Senate's overly aggressive fuel economy legislation which will cripple the auto industry that serves as a job creating engine or a more reasonable approach. The bipartisan bill introduced by Representatives Baron Hill and Lee Terry is a common sense solution based on aggressive, yet achievable CAFE increases partnered with alternative energy development that has nearly 100 cosponsors.

"We must take a responsible approach to our nation's energy future with legislation that addresses our economic and environmental concerns. HR 2927 is a bold, balanced approach and a better solution than outdated policy based on 1970's technology that will increase costs for consumers by as much $5,000 per vehicle."

Rodney Slater served as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President Bill Clinton. Before serving as secretary, Slater held the distinguished role of becoming the first African American Director of the Federal Highway Administration. Due to Slater's transportation dedication, he is now speaking out about CAFE standards on behalf of Driving America's Future (www.drivingamericasfuture.com), a coalition of industry and consumers, committed to pursuing solutions and policies, based on innovation, science and technology, to make a real difference in reducing gasoline consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
