WASHINGTON Driving America's Future today announced Rodney E. Slater, U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President Bill Clinton, has joined the coalition as its Chairman. Driving America's Future (www.drivingamericasfuture.org) is a coalition of industry and consumers promoting the future of alternative fuels, not shortsighted attempts at fuel efficiency reform, to reduce gasoline consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

"I am proud to join Driving America's Future during this critical time as we focus on alternative fuels and new technologies as the best way to meet our energy needs.

"Domestic auto companies are making great strides in the development of alternative energy vehicles that will do more for our clean energy future than unrealistic CAFE standards ever will. New CAFE regulations will force companies to divert scarce alternative energy resources to retool engines that will still rely on gasoline. It is time we develop a long term solution to our energy challenges that makes innovation, not regulation, our policy and priority."

Rodney E. Slater served as Secretary of Transportation under President Bill Clinton and prior to that served as Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration. Originally from Arkansas where he served as Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Slater is now partner in a Washington, D.C. law firm where he specializes in transportation and infrastructure.
